Seeds of Juniperus procera collected from five provenances across its geographic range in Ethiopia were subjected to cold-moist stratification at 5°C
or 10°C for 6–12 weeks. The effect of aqueous smoke solution in overcoming the light requirement for germination, and the
potential of visible (VIS) and near infrared reflectance (NIR) spectroscopy for sorting sound and insect-damaged seeds were
also investigated. Highly significant differences in germination were detected among provenances (P < 0.0001) and stratification periods (P < 0.0001), but not between temperature regimes (P=0.111). Seeds from the south and southeast distribution ranges had higher percentage germination after 6 weeks of stratification
than seeds collected from north, northwest and central ranges of distribution. The smoke treatment did not affect germination
regardless of whether the seeds were exposed to light. Exposure to light increased germination capacity three fold. Sound
and damaged seeds were distinguished with 90% accuracy using VIS + NIR spectroscopy. It can be concluded that dormancy in
juniper seeds varies with provenances, and cold stratification for 6 weeks alleviates dormancy in some seed lots. Tentatively,
smoke treatment seems ineffective in overcoming photo-dormancy in juniper seeds. VIS + NIR spectroscopy has demonstrated a
great potential for sorting damaged seeds, thereby upgrading seed lot purity. 相似文献

The effects of woody residues from Eucalyptus globulus Labill. plantations on N losses were assessed through a lysimetric experiment. Treatments were: (NW) forest floor litter and non-woody residues (leaves, bark, twigs) incorporated into the soil; (IP) as NW plus woody residues (branches) cut in 20-cm long pieces and incorporated into the soil; (IC) as IP, but with branches chopped into chips; (SP) non-woody and woody residues (pieces) placed on the soil surface; (SC) as SP plus branches chopped into chips; and (CT) absence of organic residues. Leaching of N-NO 3 ? and N-NH 4 + was followed during a six-year period and N mineralization was evaluated at the end of the experiment. Non-woody residues enhanced N leaching as compared with the control. Conversely, woody residues decreased N losses. Although differences between treatments were not significant at the end of the experiment, incorporation and fragmentation of woody residues resulted in the more favourable management option regarding the reduction of N leaching observed at short-term. As high amounts of residues were used, the effect observed on decrease N leaching could be higher than that existing in Portuguese eucalypt plantations. 相似文献

The study developed models for predicting the post-fire tree survival in Catalonia. The models are appropriate for forest planning purposes. Two types of models were developed: a stand-level model to predict the degree of damage caused by a forest fire, and tree-level models to predict the probability of a tree to survive a forest fire. The models were based on forest inventory and fire data. The inventory data on forest stands were obtained from the second (1989–1990) and third (2000–2001) Spanish national forest inventories, and the fire data consisted of the perimeters of forest fires larger than 20 ha that occurred in Catalonia between the 2nd and 3rd measurement of the inventory plots. The models were based on easily measurable forest characteristics, and they permit the forest manager to predict the effect of stand structure and species composition on the expected damage. According to the stand level fire damage model, the relative damage decreases when the stand basal area or mean tree diameter increases. Conversely, the relative stand damage increases when there is a large variation in tree size, when the stand is located on a steep slope, and when it is dominated by pine. According to the tree level survival models, trees in stands with a high basal area, a large mean tree size and a small variability in tree diameters have a high survival probability. Large trees in dominant positions have the highest probability of surviving a fire. Non-isothermal autohydrolysis treatments of Eucalyptus globulus wood were carried out in batch reactors in order to assess the kinetics of hemicellulose degradation, as well as the effects
caused on cellulose and lignin. Experiments were carried out at a liquor to wood ratio of 8 g/g, and two heating profiles
were explored. The maximum temperature considered was 224 °C, and the longest reaction time was 0.94 h. The experimental variables
considered were solid residue yield, solid residue composition and composition of liquors. Up to 90.4% of the initial xylan
was removed in treatments, which also caused some delignification (up to 13.8% of the initial lignin was removed), whereas
cellulose was almost quantitatively retained in solid phase. The conversion of xylan into xylooligomers, with further hydrolysis
to xylose and decomposition of this sugar into furfural was assessed by means of a kinetic model based on sequential, first
order reactions involving kinetic coefficients with Arrhenius-type dependence on temperature.

Summary The aim of the present study was to investigate whether the resistance of beech foliage(Fagus sylvatica) against oxidative stress was affected by soil quality, nitrogen or CO2 fertilisation, or lachnid infestation(Phyllaphis fagi). For this purpose young beech trees were grown for four years in reconstructed calcareous or acidic forest soils in open
top chambers under ambient or elevated CO2 concentrations with two levels of nitrogen fertilisation. At harvest lachnid colonisation was observed, preferentially on
leaves from trees in calcareous soil and on leaves from trees fertilised with the high nitrogen level. General leaf characteristics
such as pigment concentrations, dry mass, and leaf mass ber area were not affected by the soil type, nitrogen fertilisation
or CO2 regime. Leaves colonised with lachnids displayed slightly increased leaf mass per area. When the stress resistance was challenged
by exposure to paraquat — a herbicide inducing oxidative stress — leaves from trees grown on calcareous soil maintained significantly
longer membrane integrity and, thus, were better protected against stress than leaves from trees on acidic soil. Other experimental
variables had negligible or no effects on the resistance against oxidative stress.

This work was undertaken to investigate the feasibility of using near infrared spectroscopy (NIR) and partial least squares regression (PLS) as a tool to characterize the basic wood properties of Norway Spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karst.). The wood samples originated from a trial located in the province of Västerbotten in Sweden. In this trial, the effects of birch shelterwoods (Betula pendula Roth) of different densities on growth and yield in Norway spruce understorey were examined. All Norway spruce trees in each shelterwood treatment were divided into three growth rate classes based on diameter at breast height (1.3?m) over bark. Five discs were cut from each tree (i.e. from the root stem, and at 20%, 40%, 60%, and 80% of the total height). The discs from 40% tree height were used (i.e., where the largest variations in annual ring widths and wood density were found). A total of 27 discs were selected. The discs were used for measuring annual ring widths, wood density, average fiber length and the fiber length distributions. Milled wood samples prepared from the discs were used for recording NIR spectra. PLS regression was used to generate prediction models for the wood properties (Y-matrix) and NIR spectra (X-matrix) as well as between the wood properties (Y-matrix) and the fiber length distributions (X-matrix). One set of models was generated using untreated spectra and fiber length distributions. For a second set of models the structure in the X-matrix, which was orthogonal to the matrix described by the wood properties, was eliminated using a soft target rotation technique called orthogonal signal correction (OSC). The PLS model obtained using “raw” untreated NIR spectra and fiber length distributions had a poor modeling power as evidenced by the cumulative Q2 values. For the PLS models based on untreated NIR spectra the cumulative Q2 values ranged from a minimum of 16% (wood density) to a maximum of 46% (no. of annual rings). Orthogonal signal correction of the X-matrix (NIR spectra or fiber length distributions) gave PLS models with a modeling power corresponding to cumulative Q2 values well in excess of 70%. The improvement in predictive ability accomplished by the OSC procedure was verified by placing four of the 27 observations in an external test set and comparing RMSEP values for the test set observations without OSC and with OSC. 相似文献

Dulling of high-speed steel (HSS) cutting tools after milling five wood species has been analyzed. The wood investigated varied in mineral contamination, high-temperature corrosivity (HTC) and density (D). Experiments performed proved that up to date methods for evaluation of mineral contamination in wood should be improved. A new pipe-like form of mineral contamination particles was evidenced. The correlation between the presence of 3D aggregates of silica in wood and high content of K and Ca in the ash was established. Employing multivariable theoretical simulation method, the combined effect of mineral contamination, HTC and wood density on the tool dullness appeared to be a reasonable explanation of the results obtained. 相似文献

This study investigates the optimal conditions for the vegetative propagation of the multipurpose leguminous shrub Colutea istria from leafy stem cuttings. The conditions examined included 1) the origin of the cutting (apical, medial or basal), 2) indole-3-butyric
acid (IBA) treatment (0, 50, 200 or 400 mg/l), 3) the relative humidity of the propagation environment (high or low), 4) wounding
base of cutting, and 5) the season in which the cutting was taken. The rooting ability of the cuttings was significantly influenced
by all these factors. Winter cuttings obtained from the middle and base of the branch showed a greater rooting capacity than
those harvested from the apical area, while autumn cuttings harvested from the middle and apical areas of the branch showed
a greater rooting capacity than those harvested from the base. Winter cuttings showed the best rooting capacity than autumn
cuttings. IBA treatment (200 mg/l), high humidity (98-100%), and wounding increased the rooting capacity of the cuttings. The sprout
of new leaves was higher in basal cuttings, while IBA and wounding also significantly enhanced the root number of rooted cuttings.
